Back in the first week of April 1976, United Kingdom won the Eurovision Song Contest for the third time with the song ‘Save Your Kisses For Me’. It was sung by Brotherhood of man.

James Callaghan became prime minister after Harold Wilson’s resignation. Norwich City also won 1-0 at Middlesbrough with a goal from Billy Steele. It would be the last time Norwich would keep a clean sheet on Teesside until this week when James Maddison’s goal helped Norwich to a 1-0 win at the Riverside.

But the clean sheet wasn’t the only record broken that evening.

It was Norwich’s first win at the Riverside, which has been Middlesbrough’s home since 1996. You would have to go back to their previous home at Ayresome Park in September 1988 for Norwich’s last win. A 3-2 win with goals from Robert Rosario and Robert Fleck (2) with Bryan Gunn in goal.

It is Gunn’s son, Angus, who has been making the headlines this week as he achieved what no other keeper in City’s history has done by keeping five consecutive clean sheets in the league.

Angus has now gone 513 minutes without conceding a league goal, since Millwall’s Shaun Hutchinson scored back in August. His dad’s longest spell without conceding was 425 minutes after David White scored for Manchester City on 2nd February 1991. Bryan didn’t concede again in the league until Steve Bruce scored for Manchester United on March 30th 1991.

Before last week’s 0-0 draw with Bristol City, Norwich had only had four consecutive clean sheets in the league on 11 occasions in their 115-year history. And three of them came from Bryan Gunn in the 1990s.

Before Bryan kept those clean sheets in 1991, Norwich hadn’t kept four consecutive clean sheets since November 1966.

An interesting stat is that Norwich kept four consecutive clean sheets at the start of 1956/57 season. After four games Norwich had five clean sheets. Sadly after that they only kept four clean sheets for the rest of the season’s 40 games.

In 1906 Norwich had four consecutive 0-0 draws.

The longest run in the English game without conceding is 1,311 minutes when Manchester United Edwin van der Sar didn’t concede in 14 Premier League games.

The Football League record for games without conceding is held by Millwall (1925/26), York City (1973/74) & Reading (1978/79).

It is reported that ex-England goalkeeper Ray Clemence holds the record of clean sheets in the professional game with 360 clean sheets whilst playing for Scunthorpe United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

Norwich’s least amount of goals conceded in one season is the 36 goals in the 1971/72 season and the most clean sheets in a league season is 20 in the 1974/75 season.

Maybe there will be more records broken this season?
