Long-serving Norwich City defender Russell Martin has completed his expected loan to Scottish giants Rangers until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old Scotland international began the campaign as club captain and signed a new contract last summer which extended his deal until 2019, with the option of a further year for City.

He featured in all seven of the Canaries’ opening matches of the season under new head coach Daniel Farke but has not featured since a 4-0 thrashing at Millwall at the end of August.

“I’m thankful for all of Russ’s support, right from the first minute I arrived here,” Farke told City’s website after the loan was finally confirmed.

“Sadly he’s struggled with some little injuries in recent weeks and he hasn’t had many minutes, so it’s a sign of our respect for all that he’s done for this club that we were very willing to speak to him and respect his wish to make this loan move to one of the Scottish giants.

“He has an unbelievable working attitude, and he has been brilliant for the lads. There have been some tough times for him when he hasn’t been in the team, but he was still there with a lot of support and help.

“I’m happy for him that he now has this honour to get this loan move to a big club, and in the summer he will return to Norwich.”

Martin joined from Peterborough United permanently in January 2010 after an initial loan spell and was involved in three promotion-winning teams, making 308 appearances and scoring 17 goals – placing him 22nd on the club’s all-time appearances list.

The former Wycombe Wanderers defender links up with City’s former under-18s coach Graeme Murty, who is in charge of the Gers until the end of the season.

The Glasgow side are third in the Scottish Premiership, 11 points adrift of bitter rivals Celtic, and average crowds of over 48,000 at Ibrox.
