Rangers are hopeful of concluding the signing of midfielder Graham Dorrans from Norwich City in the next 48 hours, for a fee of £1.3million.
The 30-year-old supported the Glasgow giants as a youngster and is understood to be keen on a move back to Scotland, with new Gers boss Pedro Caixinha targeting him as a key summer signing.
Rangers are ramping up their pursuit of champions Celtic, having risen back through the leagues following their financial collapse in 2012, finishing third on their return to the Scottish Premiership last season – but 39 points adrift of their arch rivals.
The Portuguese boss last night completed the signing of winger Danial Candeias, the fourth player from Portugal to head to Ibrox and the sixth signing of the summer.
Now Scottish newspaper the Daily Record are reporting Dorrans will soon follow, as Rangers have upped their initial bid of £700,000 to a fee the Canaries are satisfied with.
The Scotland international’s exit would follow the arrival of Bosnia & Herzegovina international Mario Vrancic, a midfielder who plays a similarly slick passing style to Dorrans, in a £650,000 deal from German club Darmstadt.
With the 28-year-old expected to be on lower wages than the Scot and Norwich slashing their wage bill this summer following the failure to make an immediate return to the Premier League, the exit of Dorrans looks to make sense.
It would see him become the first sale of a busy summer for City, with midfield colleague Jonny Howson also likely to leave due to a desire to move back north, and would follow the release of seven first team players including goalkeeper John Ruddy and defenders Ryan Bennett and Seb Bassong.
Dorrans scored six goals – three of them penalties – in 24 games last season, missing the best part of three months with a knee injury picked up in January.
He has made a total of 68 appearances since initially joining on loan from West Brom in February 2015, scoring nine goals, and was part of the team which secured promotion in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.
Rangers fans are seemingly keen for the deal to go through, with 85pc of over 3,000 votes in a poll on the Daily Record website agreeing he would be a good signing for their club.
The Glasgow-born former Livingston man has also been linked with Championship sides Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday but is thought to be keen on a move to Rangers, having not represented his country since October 2015.
