Premier League side Burnley have entered the race for Norwich City midfielder Jonny Howson, as speculation about a summer exit for the 29-year-old persists.

The Yorkshireman is reportedly keen to leave the Canaries this summer as he wants to move his young family north after more than five years in Norfolk.

Former club Leeds have already been linked with hopes of taking their former captain back to Elland Road but City are looking for more than the £4million their Championship rivals were reportedly intending to offer.

HITC Sport are now claiming that Burnley have made an enquiry for Howson, according to ‘sources close to the club’, although an official bid has not yet been launched.

The runner-up in City’s player of the year contest last season, having scored six goals and set up eight in 39 appearances, has two years remaining on his contract.

With that length of contract soon to affect his value, combined with age and value, it is thought City sporting director Stuart Webber accepts allowing Howson to leave this summer may be for the best.

The fresh speculation follows the arrival of midfielder Mario Vrancic from German club Paderborn, with the Bosnia & Herzegovina international joining in a deal worth around £650,000.

That signing could allow Webber and new head coach Daniel Farke to let Howson go but fellow central midfielder Graham Dorrans has also been the subject of speculation.

The Scotland international, 30, also has two years remaining on his contract and has been linked with Rangers, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday.

Dorrans is also said to be keen on a move north, with the Express claiming Glasgow giants Rangers offering £750,000 but City holding out for £1.5m.

Burnley are looking to strengthen their midfield after securing survival in the top flight and after having to release the experienced Joey Barton due to his 18-month ban for betting offences.

The Clarets are also likely to be without Dean Marney at the start of the season after he injured knee ligaments in January and £7.4m signing Steven Defour being linked with an exit just a year after arriving from Anderlecht.
