28 Tony Powell

275 appearances/5 goals

A keen boxer in his youth, Tony Powell opted for a career in football rather than the ring – and it paid off handsomely.

Powell was born in Bristol in 1947 – he celebrated his 69th birthday last Sunday – and his professional career began at Bournemouth where he made 247 appearances before joining City in December 1974, in a swap deal for Trevor Howard.

The centre half – player of the season in 1979 – scored on his debut against Blackpool although his City goal tally of five suggests he was happy to leave the scoring to the strikers.

In 1981 Powell moved to the United States to play for San Jose Earthquakes in the North American Soccer League. He also played for the Seattle Sounders.

A national newspaper ran a story in 2002 claiming Powell was living as a woman in the States. He described the claim as “ridiculous”.
