Norman Low was one of those rarities – a player who became a manager of the same club.

The Aberdeen-born central defender represented City from October 1946 to May 1950 as a player and then from 1950 to 1955 as the boss. Having been a youth player at Newcastle United, Low’s pro career began at Liverpool before he moved on to Newport County and then Norwich, although he guested for Bristol City, Everton, Liverpool and Swindon during the war years.

Low’s time as player didn’t coincide with much in the way of glory: City struggled in the Third Division South and in 1947 applied for re-election. However, he led City to second in his first season as manager – although they were not promoted. City followed with a third and then a fourth, dropping to seventh in 1954. But Low left in April 1955 after a disappointing season.
