Defensive options are becoming a pressing concern for Daniel Farke but the Norwich City head coach is confident reinforcements are on the way.

New signing Christoph Zimmermann had to play a second full match inside three days during City’s 5-1 pre-season win at non-league Lowestoft, after Timm Klose pulled up in the warm-up.

The Switzerland international was replaced by 19-year-old Ben Godfrey, with Russell Martin still trying to shake off a back issue, Alex Tettey rested and right-back Ivo Pinto out with hamstring problems, forcing winger Yanic Wildscut to again play out of position at full-back.

Klose should overcome his leg issue to return to training ahead of tomorrow night’s friendly at League Two side Stevenage and City’s German boss is not sweating about his limited options as the club’s squad revamp continues.

Freezer’s Five: The key talking points from Norwich City’s pre-season victory at Lowestoft Town

“The main priority is to support the team and improve the team,” Farke said. “There are different options that we are thinking about, for sure. It is not a secret that we need at least one more player in the centre-back position but if not, we will handle it.

“We tested Ben Godfrey in this position, it is not his perfect position but I think he did really well, so you have to deal with the possibilities that you have.

“When you want to fulfil great expectations it is always good to have options, to have quality. For sure we think about it but it’s not that I stand here really anxious with anything, I’m pretty content with my guys, I like to work with them and I’m looking forward to the season starting.”

City’s new structure sees sporting director Stuart Webber spearheading transfer business, although the head coach still has a decisive role in any dealings, so Farke is unworried by reports that Championship rivals Reading want striker Nelson Oliveira.

He continued: “Nelson is in pretty good shape and he’s pretty motivated, he’s my player and we worked a lot in the last two weeks and I’m pretty content. I won’t comment on any speculation or rumours, that’s not my job.

“There is no player in the world you can say 100 per cent that he will be here, although they have got contracts. It’s part of the business, we need to live with the speculation, Nelson is our player, we know how good he is and what his value is to us.”
