Chris Hughton insists he can see light at the end of the tunnel after another difficult afternoon in front of goal saw Norwich slip to a 1-0 Premier League defeat.

Magpies’ hitman Demba Ba slotted his third goal of the week when he coolly rolled underneath John Ruddy in the 19th minute to settle a low key affair. Andrew Surman spurned City’s best chance two minutes after the interval from Wes Hoolahan’s superb threaded ball, but the story was a familiar one with Hughton’s side now having scored twice in their opening five league games. Papiss Cisse missed a first half stoppage time penalty to double the hosts’ lead, after a goal Hughton felt owed as much to his side’s deficiencies.

“I was disappointed with the goal we conceded but it was the type of one we saw them score earlier in the week,” he said. “That type of movement and that type of space. I thought we showed enough quality in our possession today. Albeit we didn’t have great chances, but Andrew Surman had arguably the best chance of the game - apart from the penalty. I felt we had enough about us to get something.

“We are on the back of four good performances and having been at Newcastle for the period of time I was I know how difficult it is to get a result. Perhaps this wouldn’t have been one of Newcastle’s better performances here, but it was still going to be difficult to get a result. But with that type of spirit and that type of commitment, I believe the first win will not be too far away.”
