It was an emotional afternoon at Carrow Road as Wes Hoolahan brought the curtain down on a decade as a Norwich City icon.
The popular Irish playmaker was handed a start and the captain’s armband for the Canaries’ final home game of the Championship and starred with a goal and an assist during a 2-1 win over Leeds.
Kalvin Phillips had fired the visitors in front with a fine strike six minutes before the break but Hoolahan had Lady Luck on his side during his farewell appearance, as he saw a deflected shot find the back of the net via both posts just before half-time.
City took control as the game opened up in the second half and deserved to claim the lead in the 69th minute when Hoolahan teed up Josh Murphy to fire a low effort in from 10 yards despite the keeper’s best efforts.
The victory – followed by an emotional lap of appreciation led by Hoolahan – moved the hosts above their opponents into 12th in the table but Ipswich’s 4-0 win at Reading ensures their mission to finish above local rivals Ipswich is not yet complete.
