Under-fire Norwich city boss Alex Neil could face questions over claims he signed a new deal in the summer, shortly after the Canaries were relegated from the Premier League.

The Sun newspaper claims City chairman Ed Balls handed Neil “a secret summer deal” which means the club would have to shell out £2m to sack the 35-year-old Scot.

City have stumbled out of the play-off spots after a run of eight defeats in 10 games and Neil has been the target for many fans’ criticism.

The Sun report said: “Neil agreed new terms on his contract after relegation from the Premier League last season and Norwich will have to pay the £1million-a-year manager TWO YEARS’ money if they are to dismiss him.

“He signed a new ‘long-term’ contract in 2015. After last year’s relegation disaster, Neil, 35, saw his pay reduced, so Balls led negotiations on a surprise new deal before former Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey took over on July 27.”

The report also says that joint majority shareholder Delia Smith had spoken to friend Roy Hodgson, the former England manager “about the situation and the club decided to stick with Neil”.
