Norwich City chief executive Jez Moxey has calmed talk of former Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh joining the Canaries on a free transfer.

The 32-year-old is available on a free transfer after his release by Crystal Palace this summer but Moxey, looking back on City's dealings during the transfer window at Carrow Road this afternoon, said a deal is not imminent.

'He's not been training with the club, he's been in and we've talked to him,' Moxey said of Chamakh.

'We're going to talk to him again next week, we're going to see what sort of physical condition he's in, he's not played much recently.

'We're looking at his injury status very carefully, we'll see but it's not something that we're jumping up and down about, it's just another situation that's worthy of investigation.'

Asked if any other free transfers are being looked at following the closing of the window, he added: 'Not that we have got right at this moment, no.'

City's chief executive, who replaced David McNally earlier than expected at the start of August, revealed any deadline day deals he and manager Alex Neil had hoped to complete were held up by planned player sales falling through.

'We were working on two or three deals which were going out, unfortunately they fell down and we had one or two players that we were interested in signing but primarily because those deals didn't go out, we weren't able to bring those deals in,' the former Wolves chief continued.

'In effect, we were looking to offload some of the players that we wanted to shift, weren't able to do that and that hampered our ability to potentially bring somebody in.'

Although Moxey would not comment on individual players, striker Kyle Lafferty was widely linked with a move to Cardiff City and the likes of defenders Seb Bassong and Michael Turner had also been linked with exits during the window.

City boss Neil had spoken of a desire to bring two strikers in but was unable to add to the capture of Portuguese striker Nelson Oliveira, reportedly for around £5million from Benfica, at the start of the week.

'Our business was done prior to transfer deadline day, it's always an objective that you get your players in before then if you possibly can,' Moxey said.

'As the window gets closer to finishing the madness increases, the prices go sky high – they're already sky high – but I think we already were not particularly optimistic on the final day but as ever you keep your antennae open, you keep talking to people and see if deals can be done.'
