Jamal Lewis is making a positive first impression on Norwich City head coach Daniel Farke.

The 19-year-old left-sided academy prospect is in the Norwich travelling party for Saturday's four-quarter game at League Two Cambridge United after emerging under the German's guidance during the early pre-season tests.

Lewis was impressive at Stevenage in midweek and the Northern Ireland youth international is set for more chances before the big Championship kick-off.

'He has improved from day to day and I like to work with those guys,' said Farke. 'Jamal has unbelievable speed. He is able to drive forward and physically he is in good condition. He is able to defend well one-versus-one and he always wants to learn. Of course he knows he need to improve, especially in his defensive behaviour and in those duels, and that is why it is necessary to bring them to the pitch in these type of games. It will help him and all the younger players.'

Lewis has been preferred to the more experienced Harry Toffolo down the left flank in the opening close-season affairs.

'He has shown a really good performance level, and played very many minutes,' said Farke. 'In this position of course we have now brought in James Husband but we will need still two or three more weeks before James is in his best physical condition so I think it is good to have Jamal here and perhaps he will get some more chances in the next few games.'

Farke and City sporting director Stuart Webber have been busy this summer with a raft of new signings to bolster a squad which contains plenty of untapped promise.

'All the young players are really smart guys with good potential,' he said. 'They will need some time until they are on a level so that they improve us in the Championship but it's a good time to give them some chances, during the pre-season and I think right now after the two weeks of work, they have done pretty well and I'm content with all of them. We are really happy that we have some young players with potential.

'As a head coach you always want new players as soon as possible to work with them. I am too long in the football business so you have to be patient. It won't be a problem.'
