Grant Hanley’s form for Norwich City earned him a return to Scotland’s starting line-up but the big defender couldn’t prevent defeat on Alex McLeish’s return.

The Scots were beaten 1-0 at Hampden Park by Costa Rica in a friendly on Friday night, as the Central American visitors continue preparations for a World Cup group containing Brazil, Serbia and Switzerland.

Hanley was handed his 29th cap as McLeish returned for his second spell as Scotland manager, with the 26-year-old playing the full game, starting in a back three with Charlie Mulgrew of Blackburn and Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna.

Striker Marco Urena swept home from close range in the 14th minute and Costa Rica also hit the bar during the second half, as the hosts were booed off at full-time, as an experimental team including four debutants struggled.

City midfielder Kenny McLean, on loan at Aberdeen, was an unused substitute but will hope to feature during Tuesday’s friendly in Hungary (7pm kick-off).
