Angus Gunn admitted it was great to come up against one of his heroes – but now has eyes only for Norwich City getting back on track at Bolton.

The Canaries’ current number one came up against the man he replaced in the summer, as John Ruddy kept a clean sheet in Wolves’ 2-0 win at Carrow Road on Tuesday night.

City head coach Daniel Farke had words of praise before the game for Gunn’s impact since arriving on loan from Manchester City – while for Gunn, Ruddy was one of the figures he looked up to while coming through the ranks at his home-town Norfolk club.

“He’s been a great hero of mine growing up,” said Gunn. “I remember before I left when I was younger, I used to train with him quite regularly and he’s a great role model – he’s still a great keeper too.

“I’m pleased for him that he’s at a great team and hopefully we’ll be close to him in the league, and we’ll be challenging together at the top of the table.

“I saw him before and after the game, and just wished him well. He’s a great guy and a great role model for me – so if I can have half the career he’s had, then I’ll be happy.”

That starts with the rest of this season and while Gunn has made an excellent start to his season back at City, Tuesday proved a difficult evening against the Championship leaders – bringing City’s second loss from back to back home games.

Next up is a trip to struggling Bolton ahead of the final international break of the year, where their hosts have improved of late.

Meanwhile Norwich have won their last four league trips, although their home form has added pressure to continue that run.

“Most away games you go into, you are the underdog,” added Gunn. “Possibly on Saturday we might be the favourites but Bolton are a good side, a strong side, so we need to be right on it from the start because if we’re not then we could get bullied. So we need to be focused for that game now and go get the win.

“It’s always easier when you’re on the front foot and winning or leading games, to be at 100pc your best.

“But it’s been a tough few weeks with the lads and I think the international break will be welcomed. We just need to get to Bolton and get the points, and hopefully all the fans will be happy going into the international break.”
