Shrewsbury are used to proving people wrong in League One, but being Wembley favourites is not worrying Norwich City loanee Ben Godfrey.

The surprise League One title chasers face League Two play-off hopefuls Lincoln City in Sunday's Checkatrade Trophy final and the midfielder is relishing the challenge.

'We have got a very underdog mentality, we work so hard, give 200 per cent every game, so that's what we're about,' the Canaries starlet said. 'First and foremost we have to work, so we'll do that.

'Despite being favourites because we're League One and they're League Two, the lads that we've got are really professional and we won't take any notice of that. It's not going to be easy by any means, they're an organised side, hard to beat, they can be physical as well but we look forward to the test and hopefully we can get the win.'

The 20-year-old has made 42 appearances for the Shrews this season, having made six for Norwich last season and 15 for previous club York City as a 17-year-old, earning a move to City reportedly worth up to £1million in January 2016.

The former Middlesbrough trainee was reportedly being monitored by Premier League clubs Southampton, Swansea and West Brom ahead of the January transfer window and has thanked Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst for accelerating his development.

'As a young player you want to come out and play men's football at a decent level,' Godfrey continued, speaking to the Shropshire Star. 'I've had the opportunity to do that and I'm really thankful.

'But him (Hurst) and his staff took time of their own to help me and develop me, both sides of the game, and I'm really thankful for that, It's pushed me on.'

The Shrews sit a point behind League One leaders Blackburn but Wigan are just a point further back, with all three already guaranteed a play-off place, but that all goes on the back-burner at Wembley on Sunday (3pm, live on Sky Sports).

'I'm really looking forward to it,' he added. 'I've never played there before, as have some of the other lads as well, so I'm going to enjoy it, hopefully get the result and some silverware.'
