As the latest Norwich City transfer saga continues, DAVID FREEZER looks back on some of the big fees the Canaries have brought in during recent years

Huddersfield provoked outcry among Canaries supporters this week when they lodged a cheeky low offer for Alex Pritchard – but City have again proved to be no pushovers.

An opening bid of just £5million for Daniel Farke's prized playmaker was laughed off by most and, reportedly, led to the Premier League club putting in a more realistic offer in the region of £11m.

Football is big business though and Norwich have deployed similar negotiating tactics in recent years. Anyone remember the Robbie Brady saga of 2015?

Then Hull boss Steve Bruce blasted 'ridiculous' bids starting as low as £2m and rising slowly to £3m as City's chief executive at the time, David McNally, played hardball following the Tiger's top-flight relegation.

Having paid £2.75m for the Republic of Ireland international when they signed him, Hull eventually held out for a deal worth up to £7m that summer.

Transfer fees continue to inflate as each window opens – as shown by the mind-boggling £142m deal Liverpool agreed with Barcelona in the last week – as the Premier League riches drip down to the Championship.

Just 18 months later, with City relegated to the Championship, the Brady negotiations were making headlines again. On the final day of the January 2017 transfer window the Irishman was sold to Burnley for a fee in the region of £13m, a more than helpful sum for a club the size of Norwich City.

While managing director Steve Stone and sporting director Stuart Webber both made it clear at November's annual general meeting that mistakes have been made in the transfer market by previous regimes, it should be remembered that some decent sales were also made.

On their watch Jacob Murphy was sold for around £12.5m but before Brady's exit last January big money was also brought in for players, including reported fees of up to...

• Nathan Redmond (Southampton) – £11m

• Leroy Fer (QPR) – £10m

• Lewis Grabban (Bournemouth) – £8m

• Bradley Johnson (Derby) – £7.5m

• Robert Snodgrass (Hull) – £7m

So as Huddersfield continue to pursue Pritchard it's worth remembering that the Canaries have shown they will not be pushed around.
