Adam Idah can reach the very top and Dean Smith wants to help the Norwich City hot shot get there.

The 20-year-old opened his Premier League goal account in the 2-1 home win over Everton in an impressive all-round display.

Idah has started City’s last two top flight games under Smith, but his challenge now is to kick on.

“Both ourselves and Adam are still finding out just what type of player he is,” said the Canaries’ boss. “He is a lad with an awful lot of potential. We want to help him fulfil that. It is too early to say how good he can be.

"I know he made his 50th appearance at West Ham but an awful lot of those were from the bench. Now he has had two starts and two positive games. We’ll take small steps with him and try to help him to get to the top of the game.

“Physically he is very strong, and just starting to learn how to use his body. He did that well against Everton. He was up against Michael Keane, who has played for England. (Yerry) Mina and Ben Godfrey, who was here before obviously.

"But he showed his strength and his skill.

“He has a great touch, he can finish. I felt he turned down a couple of opportunities in the previous game against West Ham, but his first Premier League goal was well deserved.”

Smith, however, is warning the Irish ace not to get carried away ahead of Friday’s big trip to relegation rivals Watford.

“We have a few players who have potential, like Adam. It is our job to help them fulfil that potential,” he said. “All players need a run of games to get up to speed.

"But we're in a situation at the moment where we need to win games and score goals so you have to go out there and prove that you’re capable of putting your hands up and saying, 'I am ready to play'. Adam has to be prove that he is at the level required to play a number of games.

“What helps him is we have come through losing six games, not scoring, and being battered a bit from all quarters but now we have our leaders back in the team.

"The likes of Grant (Hanley), Tim Krul, Teemu Pukki and Ben Gibson to help guide the others. I thought the team spirit against Everton in that second half was outstanding.”
