Wes Hoolahan could be part of a Rangers revolution when he officially becomes a free agent following his Norwich City exit.
Hoolahan bowed out after nearly a decade at Carrow Road in an emotional Championship home finale against Leeds United last month.
The 35-year-old has already been linked with a move to Birmingham City, although Blues’ chief Garry Monk distanced himself from those reports.
Now the online sport and lifestyle site, Joe.co.uk, claim on Tuesday afternoon new Gers’ chief Steven Gerrard has contacted the Irishman to sound him out over a potential Ibrox move.
Gerrard was unveiled last week as Graeme Murty’s successor and is expected to be backed in a bid to close the huge gap on Glasgow rivals Celtic.
Hoolahan is believed to be open to a move to the MLS or the Australian A-League but made it clear ahead of his goalscoring farewell he will not make any decision on his next career move until after a family holiday.
Former City team mate Graham Dorrans moved to Rangers last summer and is looking forward to working with Gerrard.
“I played against Steven a few times and he was certainly one of the best players I ever came up against,” he told PA Sport.
“When a name like that comes into the football club it gives the whole place a lift.
“Steven Gerrard is a massive figure in the game and the boys are excited and looking forward to working with him.
“When a new manager comes into the football club everyone is starting afresh. That’s normal - that’s what happens in football.
“It’s never nice when a manager has to leave but the new manager has come in now and we’re all starting afresh again.
“He has his own ideas and all the boys are excited for him to come in and learn from him. Learning from someone of his stature will be great.”
