Angus Gunn will cap an impressive season at Norwich City by linking up with England's pre-World Cup training camp.

Gareth Southgate plans to draft in the Manchester City youngster to work with the likes of Jack Butland, Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope next week, as the Three Lions fine tune their preparations before two friendlies against Nigeria and Costa Rica.

'We are going to bring a couple of training players in,' said Southgate. 'Nathaniel Chalobah, who has missed all the season so it's good for him to train at this time. He is a player we would like to have been involved in the past. We are also going to bring in Angus Gunn next week to work with the team.

'We wanted to involve some young players and we might have brought a couple more who couldn't go to Toulon (Under-20 tournament). Ryan Sessegnon is still involved with Fulham.'

Gunn has already worked with the full England squad after being drafted into the set-up ahead of last November's Wembley friendly against Brazil.

Joe Hart was a notable omission from Southgate's 23-man squad, with Burnley's fit-again stopper Tom Heaton one of five players on stand-by along with James Tarkowski, Lewis Cook, Jake Livemore and Adam Lallana.

'With Joe, we've got three other goalkeepers who have had very good seasons,' said Southgate. 'The decision I was faced with was do I keep Joe in and have experience around the group? Or give the three guys who have basically had a better season a chance? We felt the players all needed to be in on merit after their performances this season.

'History tells us that one of those standby players may end up in the squad, as it's very unusual for us to get through the end of the season and our two preparation games without any issues.

'All of the guys on standby have been really professional in their approach to this. They recognise there's still an opportunity and we've had a lot of conversations over a period of time with them about their situation.'
