Grant Hanley has already proved he is up for the fight in the Premier League insists Daniel Farke.

The City captain made his first home league start in nearly a year against old club Newcastle United, after falling down the pecking order at Carrow Road.

Hanley was unable to dislodge the likes of Ben Godfrey or Christoph Zimmermann during the Championship title run in after an injury-hit start to his campaign and then a red card in the FA Cup.

The 27-year-old scored an unfortunate own goal at Liverpool on the opening night, but Farke is full of praise for his resilience.

"He had to be unbelievably patient to get chances in the starting line up," he said.

"That tells you what type of character Grant is. In the last two games he has been unlucky, even at Liverpool he was there with a solid performance and there was a big pressure on him against his old club. How he handled that, how he led the team was pretty concentrated.

"Of course, the defenders were a bit angry not to keep a clean sheet (against Newcastle). I was a little bit angry as well because we deserved that. I can only praise the defensive row, and especially Grant.

"It was important to get off the mark and to do it in the first home game against a good side like Newcastle is good for the self-confidence and the mood.

"We might have to accept at times in this league even a draw is a good result but that first win under the belt meant it was a really happy day for us."

Farke savoured a first Premier League win of his coaching coach in customary style at the final whistle with City's support.

"It is not so much I enjoy the celebrations. The stage is always for the players. They have to go out there and deliver," he said. "The supporters want me to celebrate when we win and they deserve some applause because they were brilliant.

"I just enjoyed how my team played and when they do that is a relief for the coach. I am always pleased when we deliver.

"This can be a cruel game at times so when we show bravery and maybe some naivety and deliver in our style you have to be pleased.

"There was resistance from Newcastle but it was down to my lads. If we are there with our topics then each and every opponent will find it difficult."
