Alex Neil insists it is full steam ahead in the battle for Premier League survival after sealing an audacious deadline night deal for Coventry City's highly-rated teenage prospect James Maddison, for a fee understood to be £2.5m plus add-ons, to cap a record January transfer window spree.

Maddison completed his move from the Sky Blues in the closing minutes of Monday's window, but will return to his boyhood club on loan for the rest of the current campaign.

City beat off competition from Tottenham and Liverpool to capture the 19-year-old, who signed a three-and-a-half year deal, with the option of a further year. Maddison became Norwich's eighth signing of the window, following a deal earlier in the day for Dartford youngster Ebou Adams, who arrived from the Conference South club for an undisclosed fee.

'I think it has been productive,' said Neil. 'Looking at where we were in the summer and where we wanted to get to we aimed to do a lot of business in January, which is unusual, because the majority of your work normally gets done in the summer.

'We are really pleased because we had a plan in place. When you are running about at the last minute that is when misjudgements and mistakes can be made.'

Louis Thompson re-joined Swindon Town on loan until the end of the season but there were no exits for the likes of Kyle Lafferty, Graham Dorrans or Steven Whittaker.

Lafferty rejected a potential loan move after being touted with former club FC Sion but the emergency loan window will re-open later this month.

Neil's new-look squad host Tottenham in the Premier League on Tuesday night and the Scot is in no doubt they can now attack the run-in with renewed optimism after being one of the Premier League's biggest spenders last month.

'Since I came here the outlay has been minimal,' said Neil. 'We brought in the likes of Dorrans, Youssouf Mulumbu and Dieumerci Mbokani before this window. The earlier you get it done the more impact they can have. January was an opportunity for us to improve that aspect and it is a step in the right direction and gives us a better opportunity to earn more points between now and the end of the season.'
