Here is Paddy’s verdict on Dean Smith’s Norwich City, who were punished for basic individual errors stamped through a rudderless display at Carrow Road.

• Tim Krul 5

Preferred to Angus Gunn. Left exposed by calamitous ‘defending’ from those in front of him. Stunning stop to parry Sergi Canos’ goalbound hit from the edge of the area but from the Christian Eriksen corner, Ivan Toney pounced. Beaten twice from the penalty spot by his ex-Newcastle club mate. Perhaps that is why the mind games before the first take fell on stony ground.

• Sam Byram 5

The pick of City’s backline. Which in truth was not saying much. Nevertheless more evidence that lengthy injury absence is behind him and he can be a valuable part of whatever comes next season. Committed in his one-versus-one defending.

Vital lunge halted Canos sensing an opportunity in behind in the 14th minute. Later slid in on Rico Henry. Lots of attacking adventure. Cut back skied over by Josh Sargent.

Saw a second half header tipped over by the excellent David Raya. Had another shot blocked deep in stoppage time. Underlined his versatility by switching to the opposite flank late on. Would expect to start against Chelsea.

• Grant Hanley (C) 4

Key interception when he anticipated a ball intended for Toney, after Kenny McLean’s slip. But paid a heavy price when he tried the same move on Vitaly Janelt in the second half, exposing Ben Gibson to the run of Toney into the channel he had vacated, which ended in a second penalty scored by the striker.

Good reading of the game to cut out crosses from the dangerous Bryan Mbeumo.

• Ben Gibson 3

Poor decision-making from such an experienced operator. Swiped the stooping Pontus Jansson around the neck and shoulder area, when attempting to clear a Christian Eriksen delivery. Referee Taylor awarded a penalty following a pitchside review, after guidance from the video assistant referees.

Then rashly bought Toney’s delay inside the box at the cost of a second penalty award. Best moment was a fine block to thwart Eriksen just before half-time.

• Brandon Williams 4

Smith was in no doubt he needed to sense the danger on the opening Brentford goal, before Toney rifled Kristoffer Ajer’s near post flick into the net. Tumbled under Mbeumo’s challenge early in the second half but no penalty. Much to Smith’s chagrin.

Couple of attacking darts, one of which earned Ajer a booking when he upended the Manchester United loanee. Fortunate he was not punished further when VAR adjudged there was an offside call in the lead up to Mbeumo’s finish.

• Mathias Normann 4

Norwich need more. Much more from a player with the quality and passing range to exert a greater influence. The Norwegian has had plenty of minutes since returning from pelvic surgery to leave a more favourable impression. Briefest glimpse of his ability on the ball with a fine first time clip around the corner for Sam Byram to chase.

• Billy Gilmour 4

Best moment came two minutes in when he was on the move and ready to anticipate a turnover high in the Bees’ half. Drove forward before the perfectly-timed roll to Milot Rashica, who simply has to score. Couple of tame longer range sighters.

Crafted a cross met by the rising Byram but Raya was his equal. Cut a forlorn figure when he trooped around the pitch following his late substitution. Ineligible to face his parent club, Chelsea, on Thursday.

• Kenny McLean 4

Appeared to be operating in a more advanced central area. The value of such a policy was underlined in the 17th minute when his flick was initially gathered by Teemu Pukki to test Raya. Rolled in the overlapping Byram to earn a corner in the 42nd minute. But part of a central midfield which after the Brentford breakthrough wilted.

• Josh Sargent 4

Watford watermark looks and feels a long time ago. Skied over his best chance in the 18th minute, when Byram’s cutback landed at his feet.

Costly lapse in concentration allowed Ajer to get the run on the American for a near post dart and flick crashed home by Toney. Saw a right footed effort blocked in the final minute of eight added on.

• Teemu Pukki 5

A seventh Premier League goal in this side is no mean feat. Minutes earlier had a right footed shot blocked from Jonathan Rowe’s cutback. Made no mistake when found again two minutes later. Prodigious workload outside the box but also carried an attacking threat.

Tested Raya at his near post in the 17th minute, after latching onto Kenny McLean’s flick. Skill of the match when he controlled a long punt on his chest and conjured a wonderfully athletic pass to Rashica in one motion. Couple of tame efforts early in the second half.

• Milot Rashica 4

Hard to fathom how weak his second minute effort was when found by Billy Gilmour. Elected to go for precision rather than power but Raya read his intentions and gathered his shot from seven yards. Pukki picked him out in the 28th minute but his shot was blocked. Travelled a long way infield in the 42nd minute before picking out McLean.

Subs:

• Jonathan Rowe (for Gilmour, 74) 6

Fearless cameo again. Injected energy and dynamism and did not take a backward step when Brentford’s defenders tried to get under his skin. Teed up Pukki twice in stoppage time, the second occasion earning him a first Premier League assist. Looks to be Smith’s first go to change on the bench now, on the recent evidence of how he has deployed his replacements.

• Pierre Lees-Melou (for Normann, 81) n/a

Place up for grabs against Chelsea with Billy Gilmour ineligible to face his parent club. Right footed shot five minutes from the end was thwarted by Raya.

• Max Aarons (for Williams, 81) n/a
