Norfolk’s Junior County Closed Tournament saw no fewer than three double title-winners after a packed weekend of matches at the East Anglia Tennis and Squash Club, in Norwich.
Harry Taylor and Sophie Hodges repeated their performances from last year in claiming both under-19 and under-17 trophies, and they were joined as a double champion by Ailish Reeson, who claimed the girls’ under-15 and under-13 titles.
William Henden retained the boys’ under-13 trophy and first time county champions included Liam Bond (boys’ under-11) and Katie Cox (girls’ under-11), while Lasith Ranasinghe claimed his second county title with the boys’ under-15 trophy. The boys’ under-11 saw the closest of matches, with Sam McCluskey saving several match points to record an enthralling 12-10 7-11 11-9 9-11 16-14 semi-final win over Daniel Heffer.
Liam Bond proved too strong for Sam in the under-11 final, and the plate final proved equally competitive with young Joe Henden overcoming James Peterson.
In the girls’ under-11 final, Katie Cox reversed last year’s result with a 11-7 11-6 12-14 12-10 win over Bonnie Butler, while in the plate, Bronwyn Moxey recovered from 2-0 down to beat Rosie Pooley.
County chairman Steve Mooney said: “The entry numbers and standard at this year’s competition was one of the highest seen for a long time.
“International coach Richard Millman is working wonders with all our juniors and...it is hoped these standards are maintained for the forthcoming inter-county weekends against some of the top players in England.”
