Norfolk golfer Jack Yule suffered a heartbreaking near miss at final qualifying for the Open Championship.

Playing at Prince’s in Kent, the 23-year-old from King’s Lynn finished two shots adrift of the qualifying mark in a tie for 10th - but that only tells half the story.

Standing on the final tee Yule just needed a par four to finish on one under par for the competition, a total which would have got him into a play-off for the last of the three Open spots on offer.

But a double bogey six wrecked his hopes of playing at Carnoustie, after a string of birdies on the back nine had put him in with an excellent chance.

After a 75 in the morning, which featured a double bogey on his first hole, Yule got himself back into contention with a front nine of 34 after lunch featuring two birdies and no dropped shots.

A first bogey of the afternoon at the 11th was quickly followed by another birdie, and two more at 15 and 16 then saw him soar up the leaderboard before a painful finish meant he had to sign for a two under 70.
