Norfolk youngster Jack Yule booked his place in next month’s Brabazon Trophy in impressive fashion when he finished joint winner of the northern qualifier at Pleasington in Lancashire.
The rising star from King’s Lynn led the 132-strong field with England boy cap Robert Burlison from Staffordshire as both returned excellent four under par rounds of 67. Yule will now be rubbing shoulders with the top players from the UK and beyond at Formby from June 26
The King’s Lynn golfer was out in the afternoon and came home in 31, after an outward 36, with birdies at the 11th, 12th and 15th.
Five players shared third place on 68 while a total of 27 players on 71 or better qualified for the Brabazon Trophy. Costessey Park’s Matthew Bacon was one of 22 players involved in a sudden death play-off for the three remaining places after posting a round of 72 but failed to make it through.
Aaron Bullock of Caldecott Hall (73) and Tom Clements of Royal Norwich (77) also missed out.
Yule also showed some good form while playing for Norfolk in the Eastern Counties Foursomes at Seacroft in Lincolnshire at the weekend.
Along with partner Nick Cains of Thetford he contributed six of his county’s 17½ points as they finished the weekend sixth out of eight teams. Steve Tidy (Costessey Park) and Paul Reade (King’s Lynn) were Norfolk’s most successful pair with six points from a possible eight while the experienced duo of Simon Clark (Yarmouth and Caister) and Ian Hardy (King’s Lynn) scored three and a half. The other pairings were Matthew Bacon and Aaron Bullock and Tom Clements and Tom Nudd (Royal Norwich). The highlight for Norfolk was a 5-0 victory over neighbours Suffolk.
“It was an enjoyable weekend and I would like to thank the county executives for all the support they gave us,” said captain Iain Yule. “It was also a good effort from the lads who kept it going well through the weekend.”
Norfolk’s next action sees them take on Northamptonshire in the Anglian League on Sunday, June 2. The first team match is at King’s Lynn while the seconds meet at Kettering
Final placings at Seacroft: 1 Cambridgeshire 28pts, 2 Lincolnshire 25, 3 Northants 24½, 4 Leicestershire/Rutland 20½, 5 Essex 20, 6 Norfolk 17½, 7 Warwickshire 16½, 8 Suffolk 14½ and 9th Bedfordshire 13½.
