Winning four gold medals at the England Track and Field Championships made for a memorable weekend for City of Norwich Athletic Club.

Hainford middle distance star Iona Lake followed up her excellent British title success in the women’s 3000m steeplechase by claiming the English title as well, boosting her hopes of going to the Commonwealth Games in Australia next year.

The 24-year-old took on the race from the gun and remained in control, coming home in a new personal best time of 9:50.61 minutes, an improvement of over six seconds.

North Walsham thrower Callum Brown then also earned top spot on the podium in the men’s hammer in Bedford, to win his first major senior title.

A six throw series saw him produce a new personal best when launching the hammer out to 69.13 metres – an improvement of nearly two metres – to take the title.

Danny Nobbs also got in on the action with gold in both the seated javelin and shot put as part of a superb weekend for Conac.

The 37-year-old, from Attleborough, won the seated shot for disability athletes with an effort of 8.86m and picked up his second gold with a win in the seated javelin, with a season’s best of 23.27m.

Both Lake and Brown are now set to be selected to represent England in the Home Countries International that starts in Manchester on August 16.

“It’s up there but the biggest of my career so far was probably winning gold at the Commonwealth Games as a youth,” Brown said of his impressive achievement.

“I’ve had a lot of problems in competitions so far this year, so I was going in looking to get my head round competing, I wasn’t thinking about medals or going past my personal best, so it was a bit of a shock!”

The 23-year-old former Paston Sixth-Form College student is hopeful of qualifying for the next year’s Commonweaalth Games but is now dreaming of competing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

“The Commonwealths were something I was aiming for at the beginning of the year,” Brown added. “That’s 71.50 and I’ve thrown 69 now so that is a potential one if things went well but I’m more thinking of next year and focussing on 2020.”
