Talented gymnasts from Chermond Gymnastics Club were selected to compete in an invite only competition in Zurich at the end of April.

Five stars from the Norwich club headed to Switzerland making up a women's trio and a women's pair - although, with the competition falling at the same time as the ill-fated volcano eruption in Iceland, it had been touch and go whether they would make the event. The eruption did account for Norwich High School pupil Nicola Fleming, who could not make it back from Italy in time to compete.

Laura Ladbrooke was eventually allowed to step in for Nicola, teaming up with Imogen Huzel-Steele and Sophie Aldous in the balance section of the acro gymnastics competition - a decision made on the grounds of safety, considering the trio had barely trained together. Yet the three gymnasts defied all the odds to do an amazing routine with a score of 26.10.

The ladies pair comprising Laura and Kayla Slater were spectacular in their balance routine and scored enough to put them into silver medal contention.

However, with it being the first international competition for the duo, nerves influenced their tempo routine and the girls left empty handed.

Kayla and Laura will focus on putting their efforts into bringing home a British medal on May 15, at the NDP finals to be held at Fenton Manor, Stoke-on-Trent.

Due to the high standard shown at the Winti-Cup, Chermond have been invited back next year to compete, with the club hoping to give more gymnasts the chance to compete.

Chermond's Justine Dixon said: "We couldn't have made it to this competition without the help of Kettle Foods. Without our parents and companies like this we could not compete in international events. We would also like to thank Norwich City Council's talented athlete fund that also gave four of the girls grants to compete."
