Caring anglers turned up in force to fill every peg in Wednesday's Cobble Acre charity event to raise funds for the Cromer branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

And at the end of a magnificent day of generosity on the part of the anglers and the sponsors Jackson and Starling Funeral Services, the sum to be handed over to the RNLI stands at 1100.

The event, organised by the well- known North Walsham match ace Jim Randell and his wife Barbara, attracted donations and gifts from local businesses and individuals, and the most sought-after article was a Norwich City promotion shirt handed by the football club officials to angling match veteran and Canary photographer Roger Harris and auctioned off for 70.

Yesterday Barbara Randell said the day had been a huge success and thanked the fishery bailiff Bob Anderson and everyone else who had donated time, goods and money to the good cause.

"Fortunately, the fish also obliged on the warm spring day and excellent catches were weighed in," she said.

For the record Stephen Rouse (Martham) was the winner with 46 lb 12 oz of mostly carp followed by Rod Finch (Deben) with 39 lb 11 oz and Mack Collett (Harleston) 39 lb 2 oz.

This afternoon Cobbleacre stages the first round of a two-leg tournament for carp anglers (4 pm) and ending tomorrow (3 pm) during which Adams lake will be closed for day tickets.

t The Norwich & District Anglers Association received plaudits this week for successfully renegotiating the lease of the popular Wensum Fisheries that comprises three prolific lakes on a stretch of the river Wensum at Costessey.

The lakes contain massive carp, tench, bream, perch and pike as well as sparkling roach and rudd.

Viewing day for anglers who may be considering joining the NDAA is on May 9, 8 am - 12 Noon. Fishing commences on May 16, existing members are able to join the Wensum Fishery Syndicate at a cost of 50 from May 16 or 40 from June 16 for the season that runs until March 14.
