Norwich rider finishes season in fine style after Milton Country Park win

Norwich rider Alison Hogg finished her Eastern League cyclo-cross season in fine style at the final event at Milton Country Park on the outskirts of Cambridge.
Already assured of winning the women’s senior category Alison nevertheless added to her points haul, coming home as the best senior rider and beaten on the day only by junior Cecilia Hime for whom the course was much better suited.
This featured relentless and repeated climbs of high tree-covered banks created to isolate the country park from noise of the A14 road that passes close by.
The circuit having been, for the most part, created for the race, the surfaces were naturally on the loose side – VC Norwich rider Dan Blackburn said: “You couldn’t get traction on some of the climbs.”
The whole event was a great credit to Cambridge Junior Cycling Club, a specialist club for young riders and first-time organisers of an open cyclo-cross.
It was especially appropriate that the most action-packed race was for the Under 12s where King’s Lynn CC’s Florence Barnett and Finlay Woodliffe (Welwyn Wheelers) led on the first lap.
Soon League Leader Dylan Starkey joined them and then struck out on his own in front. Florence then bridged up to Dylan and it was only at the very end that Dylan sprinted to the win by just one second.
Harley Gregory (West Suffolk Wheelers) was third, 10 seconds down, Finlay fourth a further three seconds back, while second-placed girl Orla Kenna (St Ives CC) was three minutes behind, 16th overall in a mixed field of 34.
In the race for Seniors and Juniors, Stephen James scored his 11th win while Fakenham Junior Connor Rumbles coped well with a crisis when his gear mech snapped leaving him running carrying his bike for a full half-lap to the pits.
Grabbing his spare bike he finished just high enough to preserve his second place overall in the Junior League.
Iceni Velo’s Joseph Smith put in a sterling effort and was second Under 14 Youth on the day and takes the bronze medal in the Under 14 League.
