PICTURE GALLERY: End of an era as Norwich pub is demolished
For its former regulars, it's a sad sight, but the Canary pub is no more.
Demolition started on the former pub in Watling Road, Heartsease, last week and all that is left now is rubble.
Evening News reader Patricia Gooch sent in these photographs, which shows how the street scene has been changed by the demolition of the pub.
She said: “Having lived on Watling Road for 47 years it will seem very strange not seeing it on the corner. Although I rarely went in there myself, I’m sure there are many people who will miss it.”
The final death knell for the pub came at a meeting of Norwich City Council’s planning committee in October when councillors reluctantly agreed it should make way for affordable homes.
The pub had been spared the axe at a previous meeting following a community campaign to save it, but after developers Dove Jeffrey Homes revised their plans and made clear it would make way for affordable homes, councillors gave it the nod.
Enterprise Inns, which ran it, said it was no longer commercially viable to run it as a a pub.
