Norwich is set to benefit from nearly £1m in funding to clear a brownfield site ready for up to 250 new homes.

The £980,000 cash injection for the city site will come from a £5.8m funding pot from the Land Release Fund which aims to support councils across the east of England to unlock land to build homes.

It is part of a government drive to boost the number of new homes - and the hope is it will be the catalyst that allows up to 1,389 homes to be built on council-owned land across the east.

More details of the 11 projects across the region that will benefit from the £5.8m fund will be released today, and the money for each project is to enable councils to combat barriers which would otherwise make council-owned land unusable for development.

While the location of the Norwich site is still to be disclosed, the funding for the city location - which has been described as a “prime brownfield site” - has been allocated for the demolition of existing buildings containing asbestos and to decontaminate the site of ground gas and other chemicals.

It is hoped this site would provide up to 250 new homes.

A further £300,000 has been allocated to Breckland to relocate pelican crossings and install a new mini-roundabout so that up to 44 new homes can be built, and £160,000 has been awarded to Broadland to implement a new water drainage strategy, off-site highway works and a pumping station to enable up to 22 new homes to be built in Great Plumstead.

Housing and Planning Minister Dominic Raab said: “We are investing £5.8 million to build roads and provide utilities, so councils can release the land to get up to 1,389 new homes built.

“It’s part of our strategy to build the homes Britain needs, and carry local communities with us.

“We’re determined to make buying or renting more affordable for young families and those on low or middle incomes.”

The Land Release Fund is being administered through a partnership with the Local Government Association and Cabinet Office’s One Public Estate (OPE) programme.
