A new youth theatre company is aiming to fill a gap in the market in Norwich.

The Echo Youth Theatre (EYT) is hoping to inspire more youths to the stage by offering a theatrical platform without the burden of regimented classes and costly term fees.

Jo Myers, one of the founders of EYT, said there was enough passion for theatre amongst youths, but companies have largely failed to offer sufficient flexibility.

He said: 'We understand that young people who are passionate about theatre or performing want to broaden their experiences outside of school, but equally want to maintain what they already do. Membership of EYT will provide flexible, complementary activities and challenging opportunities to develop new skills.'

Dan Rayner, co-founder, said the company will help members grow both as performers and young people.

He said: 'We believe that providing a variety of opportunities, working with a range of different directors, practitioners and artists will enable our members to develop both as young people and as all-round performers.

'EYT will be working with some of Norfolk's most talented creative teams to provide high quality productions – initially two major productions in 2018 – plus a series of workshops throughout the year.'

The EYT will be based at OPEN in Bank Plain, and chief executive, John Gordon-Saker, said he was looking forward to a mutually beneficial partnership.

He said: 'This is a very exciting partnership for OPEN and will help us fulfil our mission to make a positive difference to the lives of young people. EYT will bring new and existing young people at OPEN the opportunity to learn more about theatre craft, and also introduce them to the world of auditioning, rehearsing and performing at a different level. This is a creative partnership that is a win-win for both parties.'

For £15 per year, EYT members will have access to a range of workshops and social events, as well as auditioning opportunities and discounted theatre tickets.

To find out more about the EYT, go along to their launch party at OPEN at 4.30pm, Sunday, December 17, where there will be special preview performances from their first production of 2018.
