A series of missile strikes were launched on Syria at 2am UK time today by the US, UK and France in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack in the country.

Prime Minister Theresa May insisted that joining the bombing campaign was the 'right thing for us to do' in the wake of the 'harrowing' assault on Douma, but the decision has sparked protest demonstrations in many places across the country, including in Norwich and King's Lynn, as well as a mixed reaction from MPs.

We asked passers by in Norwich city centre to share their views on the situation.

Lindsay Jolly, a 36-year-old artistic community manager from Earsham, said: 'I'm not happy about it. I don't think we should be following Trump into something like that and especially when most of the people in this country would say no to war.'

Kate Richards, a 26-year-old estate agent from Gorleston, said: 'It is just another prime minister being America's puppet.

'I do not agree with violence against violence...there should have at least been a vote on it. If the whole country does not back her [Theresa May], how can she make the decision?'

Sam Richards, a 26-year-old general operative from Gorleston, said: 'It is just stirring things up and I do not agree with it.'

Neil Williment, 48 and self-employed, from Lakenham, said: 'Why should we keep sticking our nose in other people's affairs?

'At the end of the day it will come back on the British people...my personal view is that we should not have done it.'

Jane Wilson, a 58-year-old search assistant, said: 'While I do not think it was right, I do wonder whether the call for it to have been voted on in parliament is sensible, because with any military action, if you are going to discuss it for hours, you are telling people what you are going to do, and I can see there's a need to be an element of surprise for military action to be successful.

'On the other hand I have severe doubts about the American side of things. I would much rather it had not happened.'

Christine Wilson, a 27-year-old insurance clerk from Norwich, said: 'Personally I am a pacifist. I do not feel that military action is going to help in most situations, I cannot help but feel a better solution would be to have given aid packages.

She added: 'A military decision should not be such a snap thing when you are going to create more suffering.'
