A young woman from Attleborough will lead a team of volunteers across East Africa to teach first aid in rural schools this summer.

Hannah Dingle, 24, a student at Brunel University in London, has set up a First Aid Africa society at her university and will be taking 11 other volunteers with her to Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania.

They will spend a month visiting villages in isolated areas which may not have access to doctors' surgeries or hospitals.

She said: 'When we get there, we will combine certified training from the UK with well-researched and documented treatments that are used locally so that, for example, we can teach how to treat a burn with no running water or how to make a splint for a broken limb with a tree branch.'

Hannah first got involved when she went to Kenya in 2007 as a volunteer with a charity to work in an orphanage called Mama Tunza's Children's Centre for two months in the Kibera slums, the second biggest in the world. She returned to Kibera in 2009 and 2010 to work independently and shortly after was nominated for the Red Cross Civilian Humanitarian of the Year Award. It was here that she met the CEO of First Aid Africa Sam Abrahams and decided to set up a First Aid Africa Society at Brunel University.

'There was no First Aid Africa society in London so we chose to begin one at Brunel University. I have found great people who are interested in making a difference and who are really looking forward to getting involved in the project,' she said.

To fund this year's expedition, she has organised the Lyrics and Lifesaving Skills fundraising gig at the B2 pub on Sprowston Road, Norwich, on February 24. Popular local bands such as HotWetBurn, Empire and The Guzzards are playing and there will be a raffle with prizes including an electric guitar, a chocolate fudge cake, gift and restaurant vouchers and a reflexology treatment.

Hannah said: 'I hope to raise as much as possible through this fundraising night so that we can raise money for a cause which will make a real difference to people's lives, and hopefully people will enjoy a really great night with really great music too.'

She added: 'I couldn't have done this without the help and support of family and friends, particularly my Mum and Dad.'
