Strong west to southwesterly winds of up to 60mph had been predicted, with the warning in place until 7pm tonight.

The Met Office had said gusts could lead to some travel delays and journeys could take longer. Large waves were predicted in coastal areas which may result in spray.

Richard Jones, from University of East Anglia-based Weatherquest, said winds of 45mph had been recorded at Tibenham airfield in south Norfolk this afternoon.

He said: 'I think there is still a possibility that during the rush hour, winds could get up to 50mph.'

Once the winds have died down, it looks likely to be an unsettled night.

Mr Jones said: 'Once the winds are out of the way, there will be showers going into tomorrow morning. There might be some heavy bursts of rain, but after that things will be more settled going into the weekend.

'The winds will be changing to easterlies, so it will feel a bit colder at the weekend, with the chance of frost and a maximum temperature of 4 degrees celsius.'
