WWE star Paige said she was “sad” to miss out on the first ever women’s Royal Rumble due to injury.
The Norwich wrestler, 25, was forced to sit out the historic event due to a neck injury she sustained during a live event in New York in December.
Earlier this month it was reported that the Divas Champion “will not be cleared to return to the ring” following the injuring.
Ahead of the Royal Rumble in Philadelphia, Paige, real name Saraya-Jade Bevis, tweeted her disappointment at not being able to get in the ring.
“Happy #RoyalRumble day. Wanna wish every single lady who is participating to absolutely kill it,” she wrote. “I’m sad I can’t be part of it but I’ll be there supporting all of you.. well.. like 2 of you.
“It’s getting closer! The vibe back here is amazing. So much excitement! Go out there and show the world why there’s a women’s revolution..keep breaking down doors and make history.. whatever the outcome.. we did it ladies.”
Despite missing out on the event, Paige was praised by commentators for helping make the inaugural women’s Royal Rumble happen.
A verified WWE account tweeted: “A special shoutout to @RealPaigeWWE who misses out on this historic match with injury. Like @StephMcMahon rightfully mentioned, she was an integral part of this match even being possible.”
Asuka booked her ticket to WrestleMania after winning the women’s event at last night’s Royal Rumble. She eliminated Nikki Bella in the main event of the evening to earn her place in New Orleans.
Paige has not commented on the speculation surrounding her injury but posted the caption “the comeback is always stronger than the setback” to her 4.3m Instagram followers earlier this month.
Hailing from Norwich, Paige grew up as part of a family of wrestlers, The Knights, who are well known for forming the World Association of Wrestling, along with Jimmy Ocean.
Paige’s journey from humble beginnings to WWE superstar captured the interest of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who along with Stephen Merchant has adapted it into a film called Fighting With My Family.
The movie, due for cinematic release later this year, stars Florence Pugh as well as Game of Thrones actress Lena Headey and Hott Fuzz star Nick Frost.
Various scenes were shot on location in Norfolk throughout April last year, in both Norwich and Great Yarmouth.
