Woodforde’s unveils new beer in celebration of Norfolk Day

Archant Norfolk 2018

It is a pint of beer that celebrates the best of Norfolk and supports a very worthy cause.

And now it has been unveiled by Woodforde’s Brewery at the Royal Norfolk Show.

The Break Birthday Brew was created to not only mark Norfolk Day on July 27, but to promote the East Anglian children’s charity, Break.

It was named by a 61-year-old woman from Banham, who won a competition run by the Woodbastwick-based brewery.

Dalene McShane-Loyd, who was at the launch event on Wednesday, said the name came to her during an “idle moment” in bed.

Rather than finishing a report, she instead decided to enter Woodforde’s competition via Twitter.

She said: “I never expected to win because it was such a simple name. I would have thought they would want something more complicated.

“But I was delighted because I never win anything.”

Speaking about the beer’s taste, she said: “I think it is really nice.”

Neil Bain, Woodforde’s head brewer, said the brew, which has a “citrus character”, is made from four different malts and three different hops.

“The real secret is producing a nice beer when it is not so strong,” he said.

“With weaker beers it is harder to develop the palette, so I am very pleased with it.”

The pint, which has a 4.3pc alcohol content, celebrates Break’s 50th anniversary and is available to buy until the end of September. A percentage of sale proceeds will go towards the charity.

It will also promote Norfolk Day, which aims to celebrate what our county has to offer.

Speaking about the birthday brew, Sarah Hulm, Break’s business improvement manager, said: “It is fantastic, it tastes very Norfolk so it is very good for Norfolk day.”

Judi-mae Alderton, from Woodforde’s, said: “It is really important for us to support Norfolk’s heritage.

“Our malt is grown in the county and we are really proud of that.”

Scores of events have now been organised to celebrate the first ever Norfolk Day this summer.
