A flag will be lowered today at the University of East Anglia in memory of a student who died just days after her 21st birthday.

Laura Pearson, a third year student at UEA, died suddenly and unexpectedly at her home in Huntingdon.

It is believed the popular student, who was taking a degree in society, media and culture, died after an epileptic seizure.

Professor John Street, head of the School of Political, Social and International Studies and one of her teachers, said: "Laura Pearson was a terrific student. For those who taught her, she will be remembered for the infectious enthusiasm she brought to seminars, for her thoughtful contributions and for generous response to others.

"We will miss her, as will the many friends she made while she was here."

He added that the school had sent its condolences to Miss Pearson's family, and the university flag will be lowered in her memory today.

Miss Pearson's friends and fellow students have been paying tribute to her on the popular social networking website Facebook.

One friend wrote: "I can't believe this. Such tragic news. Take care Laura. You were far too young and beautiful to leave us in this way. You will be forever missed by everyone. Hope the angels are taking care of you in Heaven. Thinking of you, your family and friends x."

A UEA alumni wrote: "Don't really know what to say, but feel that I should say something. I'm thinking of you and your family and friends. I'm thinking of the good times. The lectures, the seminars. The scribbled notes. The exchange of looks. You will be missed."

Samantha Roe, from Birmingham, said: "It's so tragic what has happened to an amazing girl. It's a blessing to have known such a sweet, lovely, fun-loving girl.

"You'll never be forgotten. Thinking of you, your family and friends. I hope wherever you are, you're still smiling, babe."

Friend Hannah Elmer said: "I can't believe that I'm writing this, Laura, it seems it's unreal and wrong. I have so many memories of you that I will never forget. You had a heart of gold and had a great impact on people's lives. You will never be forgotten."

Michelle Cater said: "It just seems so unreal, I can't believe I'm never going to see you again. Thank you so much for being such a good friend in the time that I have known you, for sharing the taxis home after the LCR and stealing the Kettle Chips away from the boys before they could snag them all. Just wanted you to know how much we all love you. You will always be the most beautiful girl I know. Love always."

Jo Kelly said: "I can't believe I'm never going to see you again. You were a delight to be around and such a beautiful person who would do anything for anyone. I will never forget you, Laura."
