Autumn collections are coming into the shops already. Emma Harrowing gives you the lowdown on some of the most wearable looks next season.

As the summer sales come to an end, the new autumn and winter collections are beginning to take the place of bright bikinis and pretty pastel shorts in the shops.

As usual there are many trends to get your teeth into. Some are reworked looks from past seasons such as the boyfriend look with oversized jackets or double-breasted miltary style coats worn over a pretty lace dress, which has been updated for 2012 to include full-on manish trouser suits with buttoned up shirt collars and brogues.

For a more feminine take on the trend Paisley prints are once again all the rage on the high street. Look for a Paisley print dress and wear it with an oversized jacket with the sleeves slightly rolled up and invest in a detachable collar to bring out your girly side.

If you like vintage styles there are three main retro-inspired looks this autumn. The 1960s siren with boucle and tweed is perfect for girly girls (I'm thinking that there will be a lot of backcombing going on come Christmas to get the beehive hairstyle). Get the look with a boucle or tweed shift dress and team with a Chanel-esque jacket – which also looks great with jeans. Remember to keep your hemlines short and your necklines high.

Monochrome is also back but this time black and white takes on a Mod twist with polo necks, a tweed or military coat and a patent black bag.

The third vintage-inspired trend for autumn and winter is the 1970s punk. Before you get out the safety pins the look has been given an update for 2012 and the only item you need to get the look is one that has a brightly coloured checked pattern on it, such as skinny checked trousers or a tartan jacket. Tone down the look with a plain top.

Two of the top colours for the new season are once again berry colours – red and purple, but this year the tones are slightly darker with garnet and plum taking centre stage on a whole myriad of items from tops and dresses to trousers and accessories.

Then there are the easy-to-wear trends that will prove popular with the masses. This autumn and winter the jumper is the must-have item for your wardrobe, as prints and animal logos make the jumper a statement piece. Wear with anything from jeans to skirts, over dresses, long over shorts and tights or leggings.

Last but not least is one trend that will have many off you jumping up and down for joy – black is back. Loved by many, black is once again in the fashion charts, but to really pull off the look you need to think of glamour and elegance. Get the look by mixing textures such as a black jumper worn with a leather skirt. If you are conscious of the colour draining from your face wear Garnet red or plum next to your face. The rich colours will give you an opulent look that is right on trend next season.
