Warning after Norwich burglary spate

PUBLISHED: 14:00 13 June 2010 | UPDATED: 17:14 01 July 2010

Homeowners are being urged to be vigilant and step up their home security after a spate of burglaries.

Homeowners are being urged to be vigilant and step up their home security after a spate of burglaries.

The calls come after six burglaries in the west centre area of the city since the beginning of June and two, which are believed to be connected, in Lakenham and Tuckswood.

In all cases, the householders were at home when the thieves gained entry into the properties.

Items stolen include a purse, laptop, cash, cigarettes, mobile phones and computer equipment.

Insp Nigel Richards from West Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT), said: “All these incidents are being investigated. However I would like to take this opportunity to urge householders to remain vigilant.

“We are asking local people to ensure their doors and windows, especially on the ground floor of their properties are firmly secured. People should also take note of anyone acting suspiciously in their area and contact police with any concerns.”

He said that last year the west centre area saw burglaries drop by 28pc and that Norwich was still a “very safe” place to live.

Advice being given to householders include routinely checking that doors and windows are closed and locked before leaving the house, securing sheds and garages, asking neighbours to keep an eye out when they are away and keeping valuable items out of sight.

To contact your local SNT, call 0845 456 4567 or you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
