A wannabe pop star returned to Norwich to promote his band's debut single at the weekend, shadowed by a TV crew.

Andrew Stone is one of the central characters in the documentary series Pineapple Dance Studios which follows the lives of teachers, pupils and staff of the London studios.

Andrew, 28, is a teacher at the studios, the largest dance studio space in Europe, with more than 200 classes each week covering more than 30 styles.

A dancer since he was eight, Andrew, who grew up in Taverham and Weston Longville, has danced with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera and has long dreamed of being a pop star himself.

Last year he formed six-piece band Starman, which he fronts. The as-yet-unsigned band release their debut single I Don't Wanna Dance in April, and the promotional campaign saw Andrew return to Norwich.

After appearing on Norwich Hospital Radio, Andrew made a public appearance and signed autographs in The Mall Norwich, where he was filmed being interviewed by the Evening News, before making another public appearance at the University of East Anglia's students' union.

'Norwich is a really special place for me. Cathy Dennis is one of our top songwriters and she's from here so it would be great to follow in her footsteps,' he said.

'When I first went away to London I used to come back to Norwich every weekend because I missed home so much. They say Norwich is the graveyard of ambition but I don't think that's true at all.'

Andrew, who has already been featured in Heat magazine, on Chris Moyles' Radio 1 breakfast show and on Five's Live from Studio Five programme, is hoping enough fans will download his single and help Starman get a chart placing.

But even if his music career takes off in the way he hopes, Andrew plans to continue dancing. 'I will be dancing when I'm in my grave,' he said.

'It gets you out there emotionally and physically and it's a social thing. It's my gym, it keeps me fit and it's been very loyal to me.'

Andrew, a former pupil of Ghost Hill First, Taverham Middle and Taverham High schools, was watched by his mother Linda Bevan, 62.

'He's danced since he was very small. Once he started having dancing lessons there was no stopping him,' she said.

'I hope all this fame doesn't change the nice person he is. I just want him to enjoy it, really. I'm very proud of him and all my children.'

Also watching him was his grandfather Ron Copping, 84, of East Ruston, near North Walsham. 'I thought he was very professional,' he said.

Pineapple Dance Studios is screened on Sundays at 6pm and Wednesdays at 8pm on Sky1 HD. The episode filmed in Norwich is due to be transmitted in late April.
