Walkers raise funds for charity in honour of friend
Friends and families of a woman who has beaten cancer showed their support by donning walking boots to complete a 47-mile hike along the coast of Norfolk.
And thanks to their fundraising exploits, the group will be able to give more than £3,000 to countywide cancer charity The Big C.
The walk was organised by Lisa Colledge, 33, of Meadowsweet Road, Wymondham, in honour of her childhood friend Nicci Burr, 33, of Norwich, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer.
Nicci finished her chemotherapy in February and is planning to study at University of East Anglia in September.
15 hardy souls took on Lisa’s challenge of walking from Hunstanton to Cromer, with the trek lasting around 20 hours in total.
Lisa said: “We really wanted to do something positive to show our support while Nicci went through treatment.
“I came up with the idea of doing a coastal walk and a lot of people said they would do it.”
The group completed the longest section of the walk on the first day, hiking around 30 miles from Hunstanton to Blakeney.
They then walked the remaining 17 miles the following day and finished the journey with other friends and families at Cromer Pier.
“It was a beautiful walk,” Lisa said.
“It was actually quite emotional at the finish-line and one or two tears were shed.
“Even though we did most of the walk on the first day, the second day was the hardest because we all had blisters and sore feet by then.
“Nicci walked with us on the first day and followed with the support team on the second. She was so proud of everyone.”
Fundraising began around four months ago and the group’s total currently stands at more than £3,100.
“I hoped we could get just over £1,000 so I’m blown away by everyone’s efforts,” Lisa said.
