The Anglia Square car park in Norwich has been considered an object of beauty by few people since it was built in the 1960s.

One Norwich film maker seems to have bucked that trend however.

Justin Ascott, lecturer on the BA Film & Moving Image Production course at Norwich University College of the Arts (NUCA), has brought the car park into a new light.

The 48-year-old, who lives in Earlham Road, has made a film about the Anglia Square car park and won first prize at the prestigious Tenderflix Film Festival in the West End of London.

Mr Ascott was given his award at the launch of the festival on Thursday night at the Tenderpixel Gallery.

Mr Ascott explained that he became intrigued by the building when he used to pass by it each day on his way to work, saying: “I was fascinated by its redbrick modernist exterior and disused upper decks and empty stairwells which were very visually evocative.

“The film was shot using a high definition DSLR camera and features bright red microscopic spiders which scurry across the eroded yellow arrow markings, as well as a lonely pigeon that likes perching above the lift doors on rainy days.

“The film involves no actors, but rather captures the sense that the environment itself is the character.”

The film has already been screened and well received at the London Short Film Festival and The Stuttgarter Filmwinter in Germany.

On Thursday night Mr Ascott also picked up the Tenderflix cash prize of £500, which he will use to help finance an independent film project this summer about a bingo hall in Great Yarmouth.
