Once a month mum of two and organiser of kid's craft club Doodles in Costessey, HOLLY JAMES, shows you how to get creative with your kids. This month learn how to make a Back to School Time Capsule.

As kids start to get ready for the new school year ahead, take some time to make a time capsule together that you can open in a year's time. This project encourages kids to think about collecting and storing their memories and experiences.

'Just imagine how exciting it will be to open in a year's time and see how much you have grown physically and emotionally,' says Holly. 'This is a fun and simple project the whole family can enjoy.'

You will need...

A glass jar, box or tube for the time capsule

Coloured pens and pencils

A colourful range of tissue, cards and papers

String

Sticky tape

PVA glue

Paint colour(s) and paintbrush

Personal objects & photos to put into your time capsule

Parcel tag

Decorating items i.e. sequins, glitter and collage.

Optional: Modelling clay.

What to do..

Step one

Start with finding a suitable 'vessel' to store your memories. A decorated glass jar, tin can or simple show box will make a pretty keepsake.

Step two

Record the basics, for example your height using a piece of string, plus a list of your favourite things.

Step three

Get creative and make your mark with hand and foot prints using paints.

Step four

Trace around your hand and fill the shape with images that tell a story about who you are.

Step five

Think about adventures you may have had, days out, friends you have made and new skills you have learned. Choose gems that reflect these such as natural materials, letters and photos. Fill up the time capsule with lots of interesting objects.

Step six

Add a photo of yourself. Include photos of memorable places and people in your life.

Step seven

Decorate the capsule with hand prints on transparent collage papers such as tissue paper.

Step eight

Source a parcel or clothes tag. Using paint, make natural patterns by with objects like shells. Don't forget to record your name, age and the date on the time capsule tag!

Holly's top tip: Experiment with modelling clay to create a personal 'badge' to add to your time capsule. Include different icons, colours and images that describe you. Add lots of texture, sequins and patterns to make it interesting!
