The colourful creations of the Hamlet Centre's students will be on display all this week in Norwich.

The charity is staging its fifth annual art exhibition of the inspirational work of its students, who go to its centre in Ella Road.

The centre helps adults with disabilities and staff say art allows the students to express themselves, and seeing the result of their hard work displayed in such a prominent building in the city provides a much-needed confidence boost too.

The exhibition, entitled Black Butterfly, continued the students' annual theme of choosing a small, colourful animal sculpture as the centrepiece.

The first year the exhibition was called Yellow Dog, inspired by a small clay canine, and subsequent titles have included Blue Monkey, Green Kangaroo and Orange Octopus.

Andrew Savage, from West Earlham, has exhibited work in all five shows and created a three-wheel motorbike sculpture for this year.

One of his fellow artists on the project, Joe Walker, 28, from Wymondham, took inspiration from his favourite superhero characters to decorate the model.

His mum Susan said: 'It means a huge amount to Joe to see his work in a public forum like this.

'It puts him on a level playing field with other artists because if you look at some of the work here it's really, really good.

'Having the exhibition here is very good because it opens it up to a much broader audience than if it was in a small art gallery.'
