High spirited men and women joined dancing forces to end violence against women.

A giant flashmob erupted in front of The Forum in Norwich as campaigners danced together as part of the global movement One Billion Rising which takes place every year on Valentine's Day.

People of all ages danced to the worldwide anthem 'Break the Chain' with a routine choreographed by Debbie Allen from Fame.

Gita Spacek from Undulation Elation taught the budding dancers at rehearsals at Silver Road Community Centre.

Michelle Savage from Norwich Rising said the most important thing about the event was to be visible.

She said: 'A lot of violence can happen when people feel they can't talk about it and they feel alone. When we confront violence with a dance like this it reminds survivors they are not alone.'

This is the third year people have staged the dance in Norwich for One Billion Rising.

The campaign name refers to the one billion women (one in three) in the world who will be raped or beaten in their lifetime.

Claire Riseboroug, a volunteer for Leeway, a local domestic violence charity, said it was an amazing event to raise awareness about domestic violence.

She said: 'People need to know they can reach out to a charity to get support. That's a huge step just to make that first contact. One thing to remember is that it's not just about the physical side there's a manipulative, emotional side too.'

Richard Cvijetic, of Queen's Hill, is a White ribbon ambassador who encourages men and boys in the community to eliminate violence against women.

He said: 'I am here to support women and show we can be an ally.'
