Two people have been arrested by police in north Norfolk on suspicion of committing fraud by false representation.
An elderly woman living near Cromer was encouraged to pay cash for work by cold callers - work which her neighbours deemed unnecessary, said police.
The incident happened on April 10 and police officers arrested a 25-year-old man and a 27-year-old man, who have since been bailed until May 27 pending further enquiries.
Sgt Sarah Blyth, from the Cromer safer neighbourhood team, praised the pro-active actions of neighbours.
'I would encourage all householders to remain vigilant when dealing with cold callers,' she said.
'Often bogus callers succeed because they are believable but I would urge residents to be especially wary of anyone turning up on their doorstep unannounced, who cannot provide credible identity documents.'
Norfolk County Council's trading standards officers request residents never agree to have work done, or buy goods from, someone that calls unannounced at their door, or approaches them on the street.
People experiencing problems with traders, or needing further advice, can call the national consumer helpline Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.
Anyone concerned about suspicious activity in their area should call police on 0845 4564567 or in an emergency dial 999.
