Tributes were today paid to a teenage pupil from one of Norfolk's biggest schools who has died.

Parents of pupils at Sprowston High School were yesterday informed in a letter that Charlie Smith died on Monday.

Charlie, who is believed to be 13, lived with his mother off Wroxham Road in Sprowston.

Andrew John, headteacher of Sprowston High School, said in a statement: “Charlie was a popular and bright student in Year 9, who was achieving well. He had a good group of friends who enjoyed his sense of humour, and was a member of the local scouts.

“He attended school regularly and was an active member of the school community. His loss will be felt across the school.

“Staff and students are devastated and shocked at this sad news and our thoughts are with Charlie's family.

“We will ensure that students are given any support they need at this very difficult time.”

The letter sent to parents added: “We are all deeply affected by the death, but we are trying, for the children's sake, to keep the school as normal as possible over the coming days, whilst allowing the children opportunities to talk about Charlie if they want to.”

His mother, who is grieving with her parents at their home in Old Catton, said she did not wish to talk at present.

But a note in the Births, Deaths and Marriages section of the Evening News reads: “Charlie died at home after a tragic accident on May 17. Our hearts are broken forever and life will never be the same without you xxx.”

An East of England Ambulance Service spokeswoman said they had been called to Albion Drive at about 5.25pm on Monday.

An inquest has not yet been opened into the teenager's death, but the family said funeral arrangements would be released as soon as possible.
