Train delays through Suffolk and Essex have been caused by urgent repairs to a railway bridge between Witham and Hatfield Peverel.

The bridge, at Blunts Hall, has left rail services travelling through the stations subject to revisions and cancellations.

No services are currently running between Witham and Chelmsford, with a limited bus service running between the two stations.

Norwich services will be operating between Norwich and Colchester, while services from Ipswich and Clacton will go as far as Witham.

Trains from London Liverpool Street will stop at Chelmsford, where passengers will then have to catch a bus to Witham.

Passengers travelling between London and Norwich can travel via Cambridge.

Tweets from rail users at Colchester Train Station have revealed that hundreds are stuck waiting for connections, with the station platforms overcrowded waiting for replacement buses.

Disruption is expected until tomorrow morning.

A statement on the Abellio Greater Anglia website said: 'Customers are advised NOT TO TRAVEL unless absolutely necessary owing to the disruption between Colchester and Chelmsford.'

Network Rail will be working overnight and is confident of finishing repairs before services resume on Monday morning. However, there will be minimal delays due to slower speed limits on that part of the track.
