Motorists across Norwich will face diversions from today as roadworks costing more than £1m are scheduled to start in the city.

The two schemes, which are part of the multi-million pound transport for Norwich project, will see work in the Brazen Gate, Queens Road, All Saints Green and Grove Road part of the city and in the Chartwell Road, Spixworth Road, St Clements Hill area to the north of the city.

The £670,000 Brazen Gate scheme includes installing a camera to enforce the Grove Road bus gate, replacing the signal crossing on Grove Road with a zebra crossing, a new zebra crossing on Brazen Gate and modifications to the pedestrian crossings at Queens Road junction.

During the work, which is expected to be completed by the end of March, Grove Road will be closed from its junction with Brazen Gate to its junction with Southwell Road until January 19 and there will be lane closures on the approaches to the junction with Queens Road and Brazen Gate, starting from January 22 until completion.

The £345,000 project to the north of the city, which is also scheduled to start today, will continue until March.

It will see a dedicated signalised cycle crossing on Chartwell Road, to make it easier for cyclists crossing between Spixworth Road and St Clements Hill.

The existing pedestrian crossing will be changed by reducing the length of the crossing 'stagger' on the Chartwell Road central island.

Footpaths at the junction will be widened and the traffic islands where Spixworth Road and St Clements Hill meet Chartwell Road will be realigned.

During the work, Spixworth Road and St Clements Hill will be shut at the Chartwell Road junction, with diversions in place.

There will also be temporary traffic lights in place and a temporary 30mph speed limit from the Constitution Hill/Chartwell Road roundabout to beyond the entrance to Mansel Drive.

John Fisher, chair of Norwich Highways Agency Committee, said: 'Construction of both projects has been designed to minimise disruption as much as possible but we do apologise for any inconvenience caused.'
